Chelsea Kick Off Approach for Borussia Dortmund Defender Mats Hummels

Chelsea have reportedly kicked off their pursuit of a new defensive leader by making an informal approach for Borussia Dortmund captain and 2014 World Cup winner Mats Hummels, as John Terry's career at Stamford Bridge draws to a close.

According to a report from Sport Bild, the reigning Premier League champions have contacted Hummels' father, Hermann, who acts as an agent for the player.

Chelsea's defence weaknesses have been horribly exposed this season - goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois has even admitted he prefers playing behind Belgium's back four - and the club finds itself in desperate need to replace outgoing captain, Terry.

There are still doubts over Gary Cahill's quality at the highest level, while Kurt Zouma is still too raw to take on such a role and needs guidance from an experienced head.

Hummels, who is still widely regarded as one of the best defenders in Europe, has been heavily linked with Manchester United in the past, while rumours regarding a move to Liverpool emerged when Jurgen Klopp took over at Anfield.

However, the speculation has died down considerably, particularly where United are concerned.

Any move would likely cost Chelsea around €35m, with Hummels, now 27 years of age, arguably at a career crossroads. His current Dortmund contract only runs until 2017 and if he is to test himself in another league now would be the time to do it.

A significant problem for Chelsea in tempting any big name players to west London next season will be a lack of Champions League football.

Hummels remained committed to Dortmund after they only managed a Europa League berth at the end of last season, but with Die Schwarzgelben back in Europe's elite competition for 2016/17 it might be hard to persuade him to take what is effectively a backwards step.
